I am very comfortable with my Hifi Setup at the moment and will not be upgrading for a while yet. I had been in the market for a second setup and Having looked for a small second system for my bedroom I knew Denon were one of the best brands in the mini hifi system field so I felt very comfortable about choosing this one of a couple of similar Sony DAB Systems. I eventually chose this D-M37 from Denon after hearing a demo of it in my local hifi store. Here is my verdict on the system.

Denon D-M37 – The Unit

If you know much about Hifi Equipment then you will instantly recognise the Denon style with this Unit as it is pretty much standard Denon for a product of the type, The unit is available in either Black or as Silver (as shown in the picture). So what comes in the unit? well as standard you get the DAB Tuner which also supports FM/AM and of course the CD Player which is still going strong alongside the DAB Tuner. All the more common with new systems is the usb input which also is featured here. This allows you to stick your usb cable into the slot to connect it to the computer or if you have a usb stick you can simply plug it into the slot and play your music through the system that way. Other inputs include a 3.5mm input for headphones and connections to MP3, On the back you will get all the normal connections for speakers. You can choose whether to include the speakers or not.

Denon D-M37 – The Look

Denon are known for their sound quality but also their look as you can spot a Denon easily from the shelf. This Denon is one of the nicest looking small systems and as you can get the system in either silver or piano black you can match the system to it’s surroundings. I like the clear look of the display which simply tells you which input you are playing and the station if you are playing DAB. Everything is set out well and looks the usual Denon part. It looks a very smart system overall.

Denon D-M37 – The Sound

Now onto the all important Sound test. This is a very highly thought of system and has won many awards and fans for it’s sound. Given the small stature of the box and the speakers you will not get seismic bass but the bass you do get is very good and very taut. The treble conveys vocals and instruments well and the overall sound integrates together very well indeed. Although I have this system as a second system in my bedroom it’s more than capable of being your main setup if size really is at a premium. A very good sound indeed. Upgrade the speakers and you could get even more but choose the speakers carefully.

Denon D-M37 – DAB

I Had wanted to get DAB for a while and thought that this would be an added bonus to this system for me. I was right and the reception is really good and very clear. After a simple setup you can listen to all the available DAB Channels. There are 100 combined presets available so you will probably never fill them up. The DAB also has RDS or Radio Data System which tells you what radio station you are tuned into and can also give you song titles and artists name. The reception on FM And AM is very good too but you really need to have a good connection as you would expect.

Denon D-M37 final verdict

This is an absolutely brilliant system which at Can be found under £200 for the system Excluding speakers but if you really want the system with the matching speakers it will cost around £270 so if you can find it cheaper then go for it. This is a fantastic system which has really impressive sound quality that will go loud without any trouble. This product just further proves Denon’s quality in the field. Brilliant. If you have a small living room then this may be for you.

The Denon D-M37DAB is a splendid micro HiFi system that packs a great many features into a compact package. Ideal as a main system where space is at a premium or for use in a bedroom or dining room; wherever you put it, the D-M37DAB will entertain you with its rich and dynamic sound. The DM37DAB features a CD player with support for CD-R/-RW discs, a DAB, FM (with RDS) and AM tuner with auto tuning and 100 presets, a 2 x 30 watt amplifier and a pair of 2-way stereo speakers. Everything you need in one, discreet micro system. But there’s more to this little wonder… The DM37DAB will also play MP3 & WMA files from CD or via its front panel USB socket – to which you can connect compatible MP3 players, memory sticks or portable hard drives. There’s even a stereo minijack connection for iPods or non-USB MP3 players. You can also connect to a subwoofer for more bass, or an external recorder (such as a MiniDisc, cassette, PC or MP3). It also features stereo inputs for connecting other external devices. Delivering 30W of power per channel, it features an all-new circuit design, including separation of digital and analogue domains, plus UK-tuned electronics and SC-M37 speakers.

There are USB and 3.5mm mini-jack inputs on the front of the unit, and of course that iPod dock attached to the dedicated connection round the back. With its excellent, compact design, superb build quality and terrific audio performance, it’s clear that this is a winning micro-system solution. Much like the unit itself, the sound is solid and full-bodied, but at the same time never lacking attention to detail.

Dynamically it’s capable too, delivering a broad soundstage that pushes in to the corners of our listening room.

Bombproof build

As is normally the case with Denon, the machine has the feel of something that might still be around with the cockroaches should that nuclear bomb drop, with sturdy buttons and a rigid disc tray, plus solid, substantial speaker cabinets. The remote control’s had a re-think too, looking smarter and cleaner than rivals’ offerings. But it’s the sound quality that really has us marvelling. The Denon is capable of some serious weight and bottom-end power, but as a result, be careful where you put it or this could become over-bearing. Much like the unit itself, the sound is solid and full-bodied, but at the same time never lacking attention to detail. Vocals are full of texture and dynamically it’s capable too, delivering a broad soundstage that’ll push the sound into the corners your room.

Strong DAB and FM reception

The on-board tuners have strong signal reception, providing clear, detailed sound from DAB and FM, the latter especially delivering an authoritative, subtle delivery.

Thanks to the remote, it’s intuitive and easy to navigate too, So is it better than Onkyo’s CS-515UK model at the same price? In a word, yes. But as you may already have read on the site, Onkyo has two new micro systems on the way, the £300 CS-525UKD (replacing the CS-515UK) and £200 CS-325UKD, so the competition is hotting up. We’ll bring you reviews as soon as they hit Stuff Towers.

Performance to please

The Denon delivers a broad soundstage, complete with much bass and power (be careful not to place your speakers too close to the wall or you’ll get too much bottom end). The soaring synths do an impressive job of filling our room, the D-M37DAB boasting serious dynamics and detail. But the Denon can do subtle and delicate, too. The onboard tuners have strong signal reception, providing clear, detailed sound from DAB and FM, the latter especially delivering an authoritative, subtle delivery. Using the remote it’s intuitive and easy to navigate, too, meaning a wealth of features and functions, along with top-notch sound mark this as a micro machine of serious quality. Adding an iPod dock for £80 seems a fair deal to us, and coupled with class-leading sound and the fact that there are some great online deals on the main unit, means the D-M37DAB looks set to remain the one to beat.

For: Build, design, usability and crucially sound quality are all top class. Solid, stylish build. Versatile. Bold, solid, detailed sound

Against: Give the speakers plenty of room to avoid overbearing bass.
