The Denon D-M37DAB is a splendid micro HiFi system that packs a great many features into a compact package. Ideal as a main system where space is at a premium or for use in a bedroom or dining room; wherever you put it, the D-M37DAB will entertain you with its rich and dynamic sound. The DM37DAB features a CD player with support for CD-R/-RW discs, a DAB, FM (with RDS) and AM tuner with auto tuning and 100 presets, a 2 x 30 watt amplifier and a pair of 2-way stereo speakers. Everything you need in one, discreet micro system. But there’s more to this little wonder… The DM37DAB will also play MP3 & WMA files from CD or via its front panel USB socket – to which you can connect compatible MP3 players, memory sticks or portable hard drives. There’s even a stereo minijack connection for iPods or non-USB MP3 players. You can also connect to a subwoofer for more bass, or an external recorder (such as a MiniDisc, cassette, PC or MP3). It also features stereo inputs for connecting other external devices. Delivering 30W of power per channel, it features an all-new circuit design, including separation of digital and analogue domains, plus UK-tuned electronics and SC-M37 speakers.

There are USB and 3.5mm mini-jack inputs on the front of the unit, and of course that iPod dock attached to the dedicated connection round the back. With its excellent, compact design, superb build quality and terrific audio performance, it’s clear that this is a winning micro-system solution. Much like the unit itself, the sound is solid and full-bodied, but at the same time never lacking attention to detail.

Dynamically it’s capable too, delivering a broad soundstage that pushes in to the corners of our listening room.

Bombproof build

As is normally the case with Denon, the machine has the feel of something that might still be around with the cockroaches should that nuclear bomb drop, with sturdy buttons and a rigid disc tray, plus solid, substantial speaker cabinets. The remote control’s had a re-think too, looking smarter and cleaner than rivals’ offerings. But it’s the sound quality that really has us marvelling. The Denon is capable of some serious weight and bottom-end power, but as a result, be careful where you put it or this could become over-bearing. Much like the unit itself, the sound is solid and full-bodied, but at the same time never lacking attention to detail. Vocals are full of texture and dynamically it’s capable too, delivering a broad soundstage that’ll push the sound into the corners your room.

Strong DAB and FM reception

The on-board tuners have strong signal reception, providing clear, detailed sound from DAB and FM, the latter especially delivering an authoritative, subtle delivery.

Thanks to the remote, it’s intuitive and easy to navigate too, So is it better than Onkyo’s CS-515UK model at the same price? In a word, yes. But as you may already have read on the site, Onkyo has two new micro systems on the way, the £300 CS-525UKD (replacing the CS-515UK) and £200 CS-325UKD, so the competition is hotting up. We’ll bring you reviews as soon as they hit Stuff Towers.

Performance to please

The Denon delivers a broad soundstage, complete with much bass and power (be careful not to place your speakers too close to the wall or you’ll get too much bottom end). The soaring synths do an impressive job of filling our room, the D-M37DAB boasting serious dynamics and detail. But the Denon can do subtle and delicate, too. The onboard tuners have strong signal reception, providing clear, detailed sound from DAB and FM, the latter especially delivering an authoritative, subtle delivery. Using the remote it’s intuitive and easy to navigate, too, meaning a wealth of features and functions, along with top-notch sound mark this as a micro machine of serious quality. Adding an iPod dock for £80 seems a fair deal to us, and coupled with class-leading sound and the fact that there are some great online deals on the main unit, means the D-M37DAB looks set to remain the one to beat.

For: Build, design, usability and crucially sound quality are all top class. Solid, stylish build. Versatile. Bold, solid, detailed sound

Against: Give the speakers plenty of room to avoid overbearing bass.
